Understanding DPN.
Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (also known as DPN) is characterized by small brown /black spots that are on the skin. The dark spots may be found on cheeks and under eye area and some on the neck, chest, and back. The spots may be flat or hang off the skin like a skin tag.
DPNs are neither cancerous nor medically concerning, but they may be itchy, irritating, or cosmetically undesired.
This condition occurs most frequently in blacks and dark-skinned Asians, and less frequently in other race.
Women are more likely to develop this condition than men. The spots generally appear after puberty and grow in size and number with age.
What Causes It?
Healthcare providers aren’t sure about the exact cause of DPN. However, the darker your skin is, the more likely you are to develop it. It also seems to be hereditary in many cases.
How Is It Treated?
Patients can have DPNs removed electively. Treatment for DPN is complicated by the fact that the condition occurs mostly in skin of colour patients, who are at a higher risk of developing pigmentation defects (lightening or darkening of the skin) and scarring following treatment.
The resultant blotchy or scarred appearance of the skin may be as cosmetically undesired as the original DPN spots.
Therefore a consultation and assessment by a healthcare professional is recommended in order to find out if you are a suitable candidate for laser ablation for the DPN spots.
What To Expect After Treatment?
The skin will initially scab, follow by mild peeling. The whole process usually takes 5 to 7 days.
How Long Will It Take To Notice The Results?
Most patients will see results after 5 to 7 days.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
